How to do an Expedition Lit Trip
This document contains my notes on how to implement an Expedition Lit Trip. The directions would also work well with a Google Lit Trip. The document contains suggestion on how to choose books, how to identify research questions, how to outline the book toward creating placemarks to visually respresent ideas expressed in the book, and suggestions for conducting student peer reviews.

Expedition Plan Book
This document provides a typical schedule for completing an expedition lit trip. The plan book shows how the project can be completed over the period of 1 semester. Our school is on a 7-day rotating cycle. Each class is about 50-55 minutes in length. I typically dedicate one day a week for book discussions and at least another day for software tutorials. Other days have been included to cover concepts addressed in the directions, such as concept mapping, storyboarding, and production of the layer. This planbook can be overlaid on top of a teacher's course work.

Book Discussion Questions
These questions are used for each book. They are general in nature, focusing on technology, anthropology, leadership, and other topics that apply to each book in the list. I typically give students 2-3 chapters a cycle (7-10 days) to read from their books. During each book discussion we cover one question set. Each student answers the questions with regards to the characters and plot of their book and the students compare and contrast their characters with those in the other texts.

Movie Discussion Questions
These questions are similar to the book discussion questions and are general in scope and can apply to any of the movies on the list. I typically show a movie every other cycle (14 - 20 days) during the course on the topic we are currently discussing, such as the history of exploration or the technology related to a particular extreme sport.

Expedition Layer Rubric
This document is the rubric that I use to grade student projects. The document covers the format and content of placemarks, writing criteria, and KML code.

Basic Rubric
  • A scale for what can be done with the program.

Advamced KML Rubric
  • A scale for using extensible markup language and keyhole modeling language for creating layers. Works with information provided in the textbook: "The KML Handbook" by Josie Wernecke

Students are given extra credit toward their project if they record a video interview of an explorer or an accomplished extreme sportsman. Extreme sportsman need to be prove thru-hikers on the AT or another major trail, or a national competitor while, explores must hold some type of credientials, such as being a member of the Explorers Club in New York, or a National Geographic explorer.
